UTM Campaign URL Builder
Build consistent, trackable campaign URLs for Google Analytics in seconds.
Your campaign URL
Tip: keep values lowercase with underscores, and use the same source and medium names every time so reports stay clean.
How to use it
UTM parameters are tags added to a link so analytics tools can tell which campaign sent a visitor. Fill in the source, medium and campaign name, then copy the finished URL into your ad, email or post.
What each UTM parameter means
A UTM builder adds short tags to the end of a link. When someone clicks it, Google Analytics 4 reads the tags and files the visit under the right source and campaign instead of lumping it into "direct" or "referral".
| Parameter | What it records | Example values |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where the click came from: the site, platform or list | facebook, instagram, newsletter, google |
| utm_medium | The type of channel | paid_social, social, email, cpc, qr |
| utm_campaign | The campaign, promotion or offer | spring_sale, free_audit, webinar_oct |
| utm_content | Which ad, link or creative inside the campaign (optional) | video_a, blue_banner, footer_link |
| utm_term | The keyword or audience (optional) | emergency_electrician, lookalike_buyers |
Campaign URL builder examples
- Instagram bio link: source instagram, medium social, campaign bio_link.
- Facebook or Instagram ad: source facebook or instagram, medium paid_social, campaign named after the offer, content named after the creative.
- Email newsletter: source newsletter, medium email, campaign october_issue, content header_button or footer_link.
- Printed flyer or vehicle wrap with a QR code: source flyer, medium qr, campaign named after the print run.
- Google Ads: leave auto-tagging on and do not add UTM tags unless you also report in a tool that cannot read Google's click ID.
UTM naming rules that keep reports clean
- Use lowercase only. GA4 treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources.
- Use underscores instead of spaces. This UTM parameter builder converts spaces for you.
- Keep one shared list of sources and mediums and reuse the same words every time.
- Never put UTM tags on links between pages of your own website. They overwrite the original source and break attribution.
- Shorten long tagged links for print or SMS, but keep the full tagged URL in your campaign log.
Where to see UTM results in GA4
Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. Switch the table to Session source / medium or Session campaign to see visits, engagement and key events for every tagged link.
AI assistants and UTM tags
Some AI assistants now add their own utm_source to the links they cite, which is why sources such as chatgpt.com or gemini can appear in your reports. You do not need to tag those links yourself. Just group them so AI referrals are easy to track over time.
Frequently asked questions
Is this UTM builder free?
Yes. The UTM builder runs entirely in your browser, needs no sign-up and does not store the URLs you create.
Which UTM parameters are required?
Use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign on every tagged link. utm_content and utm_term are optional and help when you test several ads or keywords inside one campaign.
Do UTM parameters hurt SEO?
No, as long as you only use them on links from outside your site, such as ads, emails and social posts. Keep a canonical tag on your pages and never tag internal links.
Should I add UTM tags to Google Ads links?
Usually not. Google Ads auto-tagging already passes detailed campaign data to GA4. Add UTM tags only if another analytics tool needs them, and test that both work together.
What is the difference between a UTM builder and a campaign URL builder?
They are the same thing. Google's own term is campaign URL builder, and most marketers call it a UTM builder because it adds UTM parameters to a link.
